According to Jung the collective unconscious is a reservoir of shared, universal experiences and symbolic imagery that all humans inherit, regardless of upbringing. These archetypes manifest as recurring themes, symbols, and patterns in myths, stories, dreams, art, and religious practices across different cultures and times. These embedded blueprints influence human thinking, emotions, and behaviors; shaping our perceptions, motivations, decision-making and actions. Archetypes have a very real presence in our psyche and even extend their reach into current events, politics, and social trends, often acting as potent drivers of societal change.
In a metaphorical sense, one can see archetypes as source codes, signifying the deep and fundamental patterns that underlie human consciousness and our interconnectedness with the natural world. Just as the natural world follows certain patterns and laws, archetypes may guide our understanding of ourselves, our world, and our place in the grand tapestry of existence.
Archetypes are more than abstract symbols; they are living evolving forces. James Hillman questioned the notion of archetypes as universal and fixed forms. He believed that archetypes were more fluid, multi-dimensional, and subject to cultural influences: in other words, that they evolve alongside humanity just as animals adapt to changing conditions. Hillman’s multiplicity perspective presents the human psyche as a pantheon of gods and goddesses, representing a diverse, often conflictual, assembly of archetypal energies, each seeking expression. An archetypal framework fosters an ongoing exploration of the human experience, psychological wholeness, and a deeper connection with the profound mysteries of life.
In the modern world’s fast-changing landscapes, certain ancient archetypes are re-emerging, while others are shifting in relevance, influencing how we perceive and interact with the world around us. Some previously dormant archetypes are gaining prominence in our contemporary world, challenging established norms, and reshaping our collective consciousness.
