Moon Slayer: In the grip of an archetype

Jungian Analyst, Psychotherapist & Clinical Psychologist.

Humanity has always been captivated by stories. From ancient myths and legends to modern-day fairy tales, stories shape our understanding of the world and influence the choices we make. But what happens when the stories we choose to live by lead us down dark and treacherous paths?

The Netflix series “The Last Airbender" offers a compelling example of this question through the character of Admiral Zhao. His unrelenting pursuit of becoming a legend by slaying the Moon Spirit reminds us of the power that stories hold over our lives and the terrible consequences that can arise when we become inflated by identifying with the archetypal pattern at the core of these stories.

Admiral Zhao's ambition blinds him to the potential consequences of his actions. His desire for greatness ultimately endangers the balance in the world, and his actions highlight the dangers of hubris. He sees killing the Moon Spirit as a means to win the battle and achieve glory without considering the catastrophic impact on the world. Zhao’s single-minded focus on personal glory drives him to disregard the chaos that could result from disrupting the natural order of the world.

Admiral Zhao's pursuit of becoming a legend – as the moon slayer - serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of prioritizing personal ambition over all else. Instead of recognizing the interconnectedness of all life, Zhao's ambition drives him to pursue a path of devastation, which ultimately leads to his destruction.

One of the primary dangers of prioritizing personal ambition is the potential for harm to others. In their relentless pursuit of success, individuals may trample over the rights and well-being of others, exploiting or manipulating them for their own gain. This can result in exploitation, oppression, and injustice, perpetuating cycles of inequality and suffering. Moreover, when personal ambition takes precedence over the greater good, individuals may ignore or dismiss the long-term consequences of their actions on the environment, society, and future generations. This shortsightedness can lead to environmental degradation, social unrest, and systemic crises that affect entire communities and ecosystems.
