Denise Grobbelaar:

Spider: Master weaver

Jungian Analyst, Psychotherapist & Clinical Psychologist.

A while ago a Golden Orb spider passed through my garden, lingering for a few days. I loved that it made its web in the Rosemary bush. Rosemary is an ancient symbol for remembrance. It is also symbolic of loyalty in relationships. This synchronicity reminded me that we are the web of life and we weave this reality together.

The spider is the master weaver. It weaves an intricate web with such a subtle fabric. As energetic beings, we too weave subtle energies to create our lives. “We are the keepers and writers of our own destiny, weaving it like a web by our thoughts, feelings, and actions”. (Ted Andrews, p. 345) Webs are often in the shape of a spiral, symbolic of creativity and circular development. We circumambulate around the Self which, like the spider found at the centre of its web, resides at the innermost centre of our Being. This pattern of repeatedly weaving new webs teaches us the importance of maintaining balances between polarities in all aspects of life, including light and dark aspects in ourselves. “Spider teaches you to maintain a balance - between past and future, physical and spiritual, male and female. Spider teaches you that everything you now do is weaving what you will encounter in the future.” (ibid)

Spider is the guardian of knowledge and ancient languages including the primordial alphabet of scared geometry as reflected in the spider’s web. Spider is the teacher of languages - how to use language with power and creativity to weave a new perspective and understanding into being. Are you using your voice to weave your hopes and dreams into reality?

Spider is associated with magic, mystery, the energy of creation and the assertiveness of the creative force. It represents the aliveness of the divine feminine. Grandmother Spider / Spider woman is an important creation figure in the mythology of many Native American cultures. In Hopi mythology, Spider Woman (the Earth Goddess) together with Tawa (the Sun God) created the Earth and all its creatures through her songs, singing them into existence. She is the wise feminine, guiding us to embodied wisdom and deep knowledge, showing us the threads of our interconnected life.
