Waking dreaming: Visitations by Dove

Jungian Analyst, Psychotherapist & Clinical Psychologist.

At different times over the last few days at least four doves flew into my office via the open front door. An ancient symbol for humanity, doves represent peace, love, gentleness, and serenity. Dove encounters such as these may represent joy, happiness, calmness, hope and healing. I view my office as a tranquil healing space, where patients may be able to build the hope of experiencing joy and happiness in their lives.

In many American First Nations’ traditions, the dove is a symbol of the spirit world and can represent spiritual guidance. In Christianity, a dove indicates the presence of the Holy Spirit. Many shamanic societies believe you must become like a ‘hollow bone’ to be a great healer. Being a hollow bone means being a conduit for the source of all creation, thus allowing Spirit to flow through you. This requires a certain openness, without the need to control while being grounded in our own bodies.

Doves are often seen as symbols of a safe homecoming. Doves and pigeons are world-renowned for their incredible homing abilities. They are incredibly effective at finding their way home and therefore may symbolize finding one’s path. Life is full of challenges, but the dove guides us to trust our homing instincts and to have faith that we will find our way home to ourselves. As a symbol of navigation, the dove is a helpful totem for finding clarity and direction in your life. The dove reminds us about the innate intelligence and wisdom of the body, a deeper consciousness – which we need to learn to tune into by becoming more present here. As skilful navigators, doves may represent resourcefulness and adaptability - a beacon of hope for a better future and healing from our individual and collective traumas, thereby becoming more embodied sovereign beings.

In Celtic mythology, and throughout the world, doves typically symbolize divinity and femininity. Like the raven, the dove is also seen as oracle bird. Doves’ homing ability has been utilized by humans for centuries as a means of communication and doves may represent communication and messages/messengers. What message is the dove bringing me right now?
